If you’re fed up with your bland and boring decor, you can take simple steps to add interest and personality that will turn your house into a home.
Whether you live in a modern property or a period home that’s had all its character removed over the years, try one of these five changes you can make to add character to a home.
1. Look after your Features
If you live in an older home then look after the original features it does have. If you’ve got a fireplace that’s been painted or boarded over, reveal it with some stripping and restoration. Stripping a fireplace requires a lot of elbow grease but the results are well worth the effort.
You can add to the character and welcoming feel of your home by ensuring your frontage is appealing. Fixing roof tiles, repairing sash windows and replacing your front door with something bright and bold will really make a difference to the first impression your home makes.
2. Create a Feature Wall
You can transform the whole look of a room simply by redecorating one wall. Choose an area in your bedroom or living room and cover it with a bright, bold paper. In character, homes choose a pattern that’s in keeping with the period of your home for a traditional look or go wild with a stand out modern print.
Make smaller rooms look larger by papering one wall in thick, horizontal stripes, but avoid placing a border and having two different papers as unless your ceilings are very high it can make the room feel smaller.
3. Dress for Success
If you want to create a sense of opulence then opt for elaborate window dressings. If you prefer to keep your décor neutral you can use curtains, soft furnishings, rugs and ornaments to bring the room together and add personality.
Choose one or two accent colors and base everything you buy around them, then if you fancy a change, all you need to do is swap your soft furnishings for something different.
4. Put it Back
Over the last few decades many Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian homes had their period features ripped out, right down to the picture rails and connecting. If your walls are lacking then fit reproduction cornice and picture rails to bring back the character. Modern alternatives to traditional cornicing can also look great in newer homes.
